TEN days of Christmas

The Christmas period is fast approaching, and it’s time to start considering if your licensed premises will need a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) over the festive period.

Your deadlines

The last dates to submit a TEN to your Licensing Authority are:

For Christmas Day (25 December) and Boxing Day (26 December)

  • Standard      8 December 2023
  • Late             15 December 2023

For New Years Day (1 January 2024)

  • Standard      13 December 2023
  • Late             20 December 2023

The rules

 Standard TEN

  • A standard TEN must be received by the licensing authority at leastten clear working days before the event. This excludes the day your council receives your notice and the day of your event.
  • If there are less than ten working days before your event, you must apply for a late TEN.

 Late TEN

  • A late TEN must be received by the licensing authority at leastfive clear working days before the event. You can’t submit it more than nine working days before your event – otherwise, it wouldn’t be “late”! This excludes the day your council receives your notice and the day of your event.
  • If you hold a personal licence, you can apply for up to ten TENs each year. If you don’t, that number is two.
  • Late TENs count!
  • A late TEN can be vetoed on an objection from police or environmental health. There is no hearing. There is no appeal.

 Remember

Most council offices will close over the Christmas period.

This year, you won’t be able to lodge a TEN from 4 pm on Friday 22nd December 2023, through to Tuesday 2 January 2024. Nothing will be processed when the offices are closed.

The Christmas period is fast approaching, and it’s time to start considering if your licensed premises will need a TEN over the festive period.
