Is property fraud a risk?

“It is so important actually for Estate Agents and Lawyers to be extremely vigilant about making sure they have got the identity checks right in relation to the owners that they are dealing with just so that this doesn’t happen.  The majority of properties are registered in England and Wales with the Land Registry and so the information is all available actually for anyone in the general public really to view so they can have a look at the property registers, all of the leases and actually will be able to tell who owns the property and whether the property is mortgaged or not.

A property owner can reduce the risk of property fraud by either applying for a restriction on the property register or they can make an application to the Land Registry themselves in order to use the property alert service on their website.”
