Increase in the National Minimum Wage

Napthens - November 28th 2011

The national minimum wage (“NMW”) was introduced in 1999 by the National Minimum Wage Act 1998 (“NMWA”).

The NMWA ensures that all qualifying individuals are paid at least the minimum hourly rate of pay. The employer is under an obligation to pay the NMW and there are no exclusions for smaller employers.

The NMW is set to increase on the 1st October 2011 to the following hourly rates:

  • Apprentices: £2.60
  • Age 16-17: £3.68
  • Age 18-20: £4.98
  • Age 21 and above: £6.08
