Stephen provides tax advice on a diverse range of matters. Part of his role is to assist and advise Napthens’ departments on a variety of tax issues, acting both as an internal tax expert but also as someone who can work alongside external accountants to ensure that any legal work is effective from a taxation perspective. In addition, Stephen provides stand-alone advice to individual and corporate clients where required.
Stephen supports the corporate team on matters such as transactional work including acquisitions, disposals, management buy-outs and buy-ins, joint ventures, restructurings and de-mergers. He has expertise in employee share option schemes, including designing and implementing Enterprise Management Incentive schemes (EMIs) and where appropriate, sophisticated share option scheme planning including the use of Employee Benefit Trusts.
Stephen assists the employment team on all aspects of tax including directors’ and employee severance payments and on tax efficient benefit schemes including EMIs.
He provides advice on Stamp Duty Land Tax, VAT, inheritance tax, employment tax and tax issues arising from divorce.
Stephen is dual qualified as both a solicitor and chartered tax adviser. He joined Napthens in 2009 having previously worked at DLA and with experience of heading up the corporate tax teams at Cobbetts and DWF. He lives in Sale.
