Matthew Taylor is a Family Partner at our Liverpool office, and is recognised as a specialist in finances on divorce and cohabitation cases.
He specialises in resolving complex financial disputes following divorce, often involving companies, trusts, pensions and international assets.
Matthew is frequently instructed to prepare pre and post-nuptial agreements, and has a specialism in advising unmarried cohabitants on their rights following relationship breakdown. He also represents clients in children disputes, including those with an international element.
With a particular interest in cases involving allegations of narcissism, Matthew works with therapists, counsellors, domestic abuse advisors and divorce coaches to ensure clients have access to emotional support through what can be a traumatic period.
He is a member of Resolution’s Pension, Tax and Financial Remedies committee, contributing to responses to government on family law reforms and inputting to training for family lawyers in those areas.
In addition, Matthew is a prominent media commentator on family law issues, including appearing on the Martin Lewis Money Show Live, is ranked as a leading partner in The Legal 500 and is a prolific podcaster, appearing on many shows including The Martin Lewis Podcast, The Times’ Feel Better About Money and Resolution’s Talking Family Law.
Experience
Recent cases include:
- Acting for the successful applicant wife in the reported case S v S [2023] EWFC 269 (B), achieving a sharing claim in a c.£12m case where the parties’ date of separation was in dispute, with significant costs orders made in his client’s favour.
- Preparing a pre-nuptial agreement for a client who was due to inherit a majority shareholding in a $1bn company.
- Advising a UK-based husband who had significant US company holdings, working with his accountants, wealth managers and tax advisors across both jurisdictions to negotiate a settlement outside court that allowed him to retain those companies.
- Representing a claimant in a complex cohabitation case concerning a farm in her ex-partner’s sole name, securing an interest in the property as a result of the contributions she had made to it.
- Helping a mother to relocate to her country of birth with her child after securing findings that she and her child had been subjected to serious domestic abuse by her ex-partner.
