John is a commercial property partner based in our Preston office.  He advises on a broad range of property matters for clients including landowners, developers and retailers in connection with retail developments; private investors on landlord and tenant matters; financial institutions in respect of property investment work; portfolio property due diligence on corporate acquisitions and refinancing; leasehold management including strategic planning and all steps relevant to the lease renewal process.


John is a highly experienced commercial property specialist and advises clients across a wide variety of industries.  He has a particular expertise in retail and has acted for major national retailers on all aspects of property work with particular focus on new store openings and reorganization of sites to maintain continuity of trade, property management matters, sales, acquisitions and landlord and tenant issues including client internal strategy consideration with the wider professional team.


John, who lives in Bolton, joined Napthens in 2016 having been a partner with international law firm Hill Dickinson in Liverpool for 12 years.  Prior to this John was with niche property practice Bullivant Jones where he became partner in 2002 (prior to its merger with Hill Dickinson).

How do you like to relax out of work?
Running, swimming, local pub with friends, and reading a good book

Name your favourite book/film/music:
Book - Wild Swans by Jung Chang  / Film - Meet Joe Black (1998) / Music - ELO album “All Over the World” - a family tradition to play the album when driving on holiday so any track reminds me of that.

What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
Meeting people, thinking through the practicalities of the property and the transaction before the paperwork and working with people who want to achieve the same outcome

If you had an alternative career – what would be your fantasy job?
Being a cameraman who takes shots like a whale tail fin rising out of the water on Blue Planet series
