30 years at the top for Panaz

Over three decades, Panaz has been a force for change in the textiles industry.

Founded by CEO Tony Attard in 1985, Panaz is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of fabrics and wallcoverings for sectors including hospitality, healthcare and commercial industries. Twice winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, for Innovation and for Export Achievement, the business is now based at new European headquarters, a 90,000 sq ft facility in Burnley, with 10,000 items of stock available overnight from a new computerised warehouse.

Employing 85 staff and launching 10 collections a year, the business is about more than just impressive numbers. Tony Attard, now holder of an OBE, explained: “We have a strong ethic of innovation and excellence. But while we’re proud of our design skills and aesthetically pleasing fabrics, we continue to put a real focus on differentiation through technical innovation.

“Panaz was a forerunner in the development of flame retardant fabrics and has accumulated a number of trademarks over the years. “We were also the first company to develop intelligent textiles for healthcare interiors, at once aesthetically pleasing but also flame retardant, stain resistant, anti-microbial and, in the case of upholsteries, waterproof.“ We were one of the very first companies in Europe to offer inherently flame retardant fabrics to hospitals, 27 years ago.”

Panaz works worldwide with an established subsidiary in the USA and a network of agents and distributors. Its product lines have been used in high profile projects including supplying the Queen Mary II cruise ship, and the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort with 20,000 metres of fabric including bed throws, drapery and shower curtains for its 400-room flagship hotel.

The company is also responsible for the framework contracts to supply fabric to the Premier Inn and Holiday Inn Express chains globally. Tony Attard explained that the business always has one eye on the future: “Growth is a core principal for us, as we look to extend our reach worldwide.

“We believe we can become the largest supplier of contract fabric solutions in Europe, while continuing to deliver design excellence and leading the market in terms of innovation.”
