Brief Conversations: Cumbria, the challenges and opportunities

With over 2,163 sq miles and a population of around 498,000 people, Cumbria is a place where thousands of people visit to experience its breath-taking countryside and in particular the Lake District.

The visitor economy plays a significant role in the economy, supporting over 65,000 jobs, and (in 2018) welcoming over 47 million visitors.

Manufacturing is the second largest sector supporting 35,000 jobs, closely followed by the burgeoning energy sector which is a focal point for international nuclear expertise and a leader in the generation of renewable energy.

Napthens Head of Cumbria, Jamie Allison sat down with Gill Haigh, managing director at Cumbria Tourism, and John Houghton of A Lamb Associates, a construction consultancy based in Kirkby Lonsdale, for a brief conversation about the key challenges and opportunities for the county.
